We have some chance this time, although the odds are against us.
It is getting harder to win the World Cup. In the past, there was little chance that any nation outside Europe and South America would win, but teams like Ghana and Australia are demonstrating that this is changing. It stands to reason that if more nations are serious contenders no one nation will win as often.
The number of foreigh players in English soccer, compared to English players going to top clubs abroad is a serious problem. Where do Premiership clubs look first to sign a star, i.e. crowd and sponsorship attracting, player? As a striker. And where is the England team weak? Lack of strikers! I don't think this is a coincidence and until it is addressed England will not score enough goals to win the World Cup.
We need to find a top, committed, manager to win. Perhaps Alan Shearer a few years down the line.

Maybe this year, but the goals need to come. The easy part of the World Cup is over, now the fun begins.

I think this could be the year for countries that have already won it (Brazil, Argentina, Germany), but England is a stretch. Even if they destroy Ecuador, they'll have to get through the Dutch or the Portuguese just to get to the semis.
