The Secret Service is not an agency that just protects the President.

The Secret Service is the law enforcement arm of the U.S. Treasury. They investigate and prosecute fraud, forgeries, stolen social security checks, stolen mail and a whole bunch of money related fraud, theft, tax loss, etc.

It wasn't until until long after establishment of the Secret Service, after McKinley's assasination, that the Secret Service was assigned to the task of protecting the President.

Because of the Secret Service's long time service to protecting money, currency, counterfeiting and other money issues.

It protects the president because it was the only investigative agency that did law enforcement back in William McKinley's day. The FBI wasn't created until the 30's and the CIA wasn't created until the 40's. So the Secret Service is probably the oldest law enforcement agency in the U.S.

The U.S. Secret Service is a branch of the Treasury Department, and is under the directorship of the Secretary of the Treasury. The USSS was originally formed to combat counterfeiting of U.S. currency. Prsidential protection came at a much later time. Not all Secret Service enforcement personnel are Special Agents. The uniformed branch of the USSS are nothing more than security guards. They don't usually go out into the field, nor investigative work.
