The problem is not with banning it. There are laws against it. The problem is in the enforcement. There are only so many cops to go around.

I notice some answerers suggesting that child porn is not illegal in certain countries. While certain countries may be less successful than others in enforcing their laws, I know of no country in the world where child pornography is considererd acceptable or legal.

The internet DOES make the enforcement of child porn laws very hard. I don't pretend to have a solution but I notice that it is often those people who criticise Google for having agreed to help the Chinese Governement censor the internet in China, who want the internet to be completely free. The internet cannot be completely free if we are to protect children.

Each child porn image is a record of child abuse.

The problem exists worldwide and until bodies such as the UN are able to wrest power over the internet from pure business interests, the internet will remain a dangerous place and a breeding ground for the disreputable.

It is already illegal, but only in the US. The problem is that when one polices the Internet, all countries in the world are involved, and there is no universal set of rules that can be applied.

If it happens in the US, and it's hosted in the US, they'll get caught and prosecuted. If it's hosted in another country, there's not a lot we can do about it right now. Until there's a consistent set of universally applied laws covering the Internet, there will be loopholes. As long as there are loopholes, there are people who will abuse them.
