Seeing that basketball has already garnered considerably more international fame than football, it won't be much longer.
Young kids and grown people both love basketball. And not just america, but around the world. although since football is one of those anchor pastime sports, it will probably take a few more years. But if the NBA continues to showcase great young players and climatic seasons like just last year, then it might be sooner than most people think.

It depends on the governing body of the game (if they are aggressive in marketing the game). I don't know much about Basketball or its politics but I think the Americans should do more to promote the game overseas. But on the other hand, I think the soccer crowd can sometimes over rely on its position as the world's number one sport. Soccer should continue to develop the game in Asia (particularly China and India) as well as in Africa. Soccer still has work to do if it wants to maintain a healthy future in these regions.
Basketball has many good points.
-It is easy to play (but difficult to master)
-easy to follow (a good spectator sport)
-plenty of action
-the rules are fairly simple (compared to other sports)
-a result usually occurs (ties are unlikely)
-a high rate of scoring
-can be heavily analysed (never underestimate fun of using sporting statistics)
-can be easily adapted to television
*time broken down into quarters, allows advertising during breaks
*small court that provides atmosphere, crowd gathered in close, mostly indoors. Noise is amplified.
The big disadvantage of soccer is the scoring. The better team can play well for most of the game but may lose if the weaker side scores at the end. Also for knockout competitions such as the World Cup, some games will inevitably be decided by penalty shootout.
However, one big disadvantage of basketball is that it needs basketball hoops and a basketball. This limits the places where basketball can be played, whereas soccer can be played pretty much anywhere. You don't even need a proper soccer ball (just something that is kickable). This means it is a lot cheaper to play soccer. If we're talking about global expansion things like this really do matter.
If basketball can somehow overcome this obstacle, and become aggressive in growing the sport (and if soccer neglects its development of the sport) then it may overtake soccer within 30 to 40 years.

I don't believe basketball will ever overtake soccer/football. In many countries it is the only sport played and after tournaments like the World Cup its popularity grows substantially. Even in a small country (population wise) like Australia, soccer is the most played sport. Then with the success of the Socceroos it makes the game grow even further and faster. Football is played in so many countries whereas basketball does not have same following. Furthermore, to play basketball you need to be reasonably tall to succeed in the major leagues. Unfortunately the majority of people are under that height. Football doesn't require the height (even though it can be an advantage) and can be played by virtually anyone.

it won't happen. basketball is popular and always will be but its more of a north american sport. same with your "hip hop culture" theory. I dont ever hear of hip hop being a huge phenomenon in places other thn north america. im not sayin its not popular in other places, but not as much as it is here (cause north america is where the money is). Soccer is played in basically every country, so you can't really surpass it unless it suddenly became less popular which is not likely b/c of the long history of soccer in africa, europe and south america.

it will be forever coz football will never be overtaken by any other sport as the most popular sport in the world. just see the atmosphere at the World Cup & you'll see why. Basketball for me, it is just boring. Only USA loves basketball.

Not long, if FIFA doesn't get its act together and sort out the rampant duping of referees by players going to ground at the slightest opportunity, especially in the penalty area. The 2006 tournament has been ruined by this problem. Come on FIFA... sort it!

It never will. Soccer is "the people's game" with no distinction as to race, religion, or status. Basketball is still a "rich kids" game in most countries.

i dont think basketball can. you kinda have to have a hoop which a lot of people in poor or rural areas dont have. with soccer you just need two objects for goals. however basketball is gettin pretty big.
