To make them easier to get in and out of. Also so the waists don't have to be so large and full of elastic to fit over your hips.

elastic jeans back in the day was the sorriest excuse for casual wear. it was ugly and it made every girl look like they just stepped out of their grandmother's closet. i am 20 but my mom still has a pair of it in her closet. i just stick my tounge out just looking at it. eggghhh!!!
