Well, usually, we just say he/they finished 3d. However, in horse racing, they say win (1st), place (2d), and show (3d).

In the Miss America pagent, they use the term "Second Runner Up" to denote the third place winner. But that's the only place I hear that term used.

From the Olympics, we also might say "They got the bronze", since a bronze medal designates 3rd place.
