For some reason, they LOVE mulch. I don't have ants anywhere else but in the gardens I mulch. I tried using boric acid but really don't like the white lines. I got the new Bayer insecticide in pellet form and sprinkled in in the gardens. I don't know whether it killed them or whether they just moved on, but they aren't crawling all over it anymore!

I would not worry about ants in your mulch. They will acually help break it down for you. I would worry about it when you put it in your garden. You could use a diazinon granules there and it will take care of the problem. Boiled water would work fine if you did not want to use a commercial pesticide. Understand though that you probably never be able to keep ants out of a compost pile. Just to much free food!

2 options here....non chemical you can heat up water and dump it on there...it takes time but its the safest for your garden. I'd suggest a ton of teapots with water or a big bowl to heat it up. It will kill them instantly. Or you can use traps/ pesticides. Call the orick man or whatever you have in your area, they can spray them off but that would put the pesticide on your garden or w/e your using it for. Unless your eating where its placed i dont think it'll do much harm if any. Or you can just put up ant traps to catch them.

Sprinkle cinnamon throughout the mulch, ants don't like cinnamon. If you have ants coming into your house you can sprinkle it where they are coming in at.

If they are fire ants, carpenter ants, even termites, certainly there are products to treat the area. If they aren't harmful, why not just let them live? Especially if they aren't harmful they are creating a service on many levels.
