As long as she is not currently undergoing treatment, such as chemotherapy or radiation, this should be no problem. The cancer isn't going to come out in the milk for the baby etc... Breastfeeding the baby is very healthy for her both mentally and physically, and has great benefits for her. She can talk to her local la leche league and they can try to put her in contact with someone who has been through this, they keep a database of people through tough situations to add peer support.

Your physician is the best person to consult for something as important as this however, I know that if a woman has breast cancer, it does not matter what breast it is in, if she is receiving chemo or treatment of any kind - the lymph nodes in both breasts are going to receive the medication - and that means, whatever is sent to the breasts, the baby will also receive. There is no separate tubing from one breast to the other. The same would stand if the baby broke the skin on one breast and the breast started to bleed - breast feeding would be over for the mother and baby for safety reasons. You don't want your child to receive any contaminants of any kind. Yes, there is contamination.

she should be fine. my son only nursed from the left side for the first two months of his life...he absolutely refused the right breast. If the doctor says its fine, she should go with it. Breastfeeding is the best thing in the world for her baby and not even cancer should stand in the way of that!

God Bless.
