The compressor works off and electric clutch. It may be turning off and on. Check it with the A/C on and your hood up. Watch the pulley on your A/C compressor and see what it does.

The air conditioner works from a compressor. When you click the air on, the clutch on the compressor kicks in, and the belt attached to it starts turning the compressor.
The knocking sound you're hearing is the piston in the compressor. Start by adding compressor oil. If that doesn't fix it, you'll have to replace the compressor.

Sounds like the AC compressor is putting a large load on your engine causing the engine to run hotter. This will cause pinging in the engine, or if the engine has high mileage, possibly the start of a connecting rod on its way out. Best bet is to take it to a reputable garage in your area and get a free assessement of the condition of the engine. Unless you are still under a manufacturers warrantee.
Good Luck

You probably need to replace your automatic belt tensioner pulley. When the stress of the AC compressor pulls on the engine, that is usually the first part of the belt system to react.
