SOME PEOPLE DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT... but they still try to answer questions. Sad, is it not? I too live in southern California & the oxialis in my area is beautiful and welcome. In San Diego we are blessed by having our oxialis bloom spring and fall. Some of my favorates...
OXIALIS hirta, many upright, stems gradually fall over with weight of many bright rose-pink blooms. great for rock gardens & hanging baskets.
O. lasiandra, grown in clumps cute one inch wide red flowers and blooms well all summer.
O. cernua, tiny clusters of bright green leaves often spotted with brown. flowering stems rise above foliage reaching 1 ft. high in spring and fall, topped withclusters of 1 inch, bright yellow flowers.
O. purpurea, bears 1-2 inch rose red flowers over a long period, spring and fall. The "Grand Duchess" have larger flowers in pink, white or lavender. Beautiful!
Hardly a weed as others above seem to think.

The other type has purple blooms and is not as numerous. I have two cultivated varieties. THe green shamerock and the purple leaved shamerock. The green one is taking a beating from the heat now.

Out here, So Cal it is considered to be a weed and it is growing wild on my hillside. Mine blooms yellow and I happen to think it is a beautiful flower, so I don't pull it out.
