There have been a lot of amazing guitarists in the past and now. To name just a few: Robert Johnson, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Pete Townshend, Trey Anastasio, Jerry Garcia, Duane Allman, Buddy Guy, and to name someone I have gained much respect for (his playing) as of the past year or so is John Mayer. Maybe you're assumption that there aren't many amazing guitar players is due to your lack of music openmindedness? Metallica is great, but if that's all you find that's good I'm sorry.

What?
You don't think that there are a lot of "really awesome guitarists out there"???

Dude - you gotta get out more and listen to a WIDE variety of music and expand your musical knowledge!

As for my "all-time-favourite guitarist", I really can't pick just one, since I enjoy so many styles of music and there are a lot of genius guitarists that shine in rock but suck in jazz or blues or country or world music.

So, for grins, I'll just name names...it's up to you to tune into these cats and discover some new sounds.

My list (and not in any particular order):
Leo Kottke, Al Di Meola, Andres Segovia, Chet Atkins, Eric Clapton, Ronnie Montrose, Les Paul, John McLaughlin, George Harrison, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jeff Beck, Buddy Guy, The Edge, Duane Allman, B.B. King, Ritchie Blackmore and of course, Jimi Hendrix.
