I think it has to do with the level of education. When you are just a High School Grad, you find yourself getting jobs that are minimum wage. It is difficult to maintain your bills and your household when you have a job that only brings in so much. Also, in some cases a divided relationship can cause that. If a man is paying a considerable amount for maintenance, he may find that only when his children have grown, that he can make ends meet. Or if a woman finds herself raising her children alone. It is difficult to get past feeding, clothing and education without some self-sacrifice. If it is a single, well its tough to pay for a car, a house, and entertainment.
Sometimes a lousy job is better than no job at all.

you make just above min wage. never gunna make it out ahead no matter what. even if you get rises you still have to pay off the debt from before. alot of people are in a class called the working poor. if you only make 16,000 a year and have any kids your gunna be poor no matter what you do. even if you get cheap housing and cheap childcare. the debt will add up quicker then you can make the money. if you have an unexpected bill pop up then everything goes bad. its not a fun life to have.

some people regardless how uch they make will always be broke , maybe no willpower or maybe they just don't care . for example if somebody makes 10 an hour for 5 years and gets a raise they could easily save money but they will up their lifestyle to make sure they spend it all but have better things .

The more you make the more you spend. Most people can't afford the things they purchase. I see people using credit cards to buy food.

hmm.. good question:) I guess that's because they take too much risk when than young(get into debt) and than later in life they afraid to take any risk at all(explore more opportunities like getting another degree or move to a different place).
That's how I see it "you should take risk" and go on with your dreams.

i think it has some to do w/ careless/unnecessary spending plus the cost of living in an expensive city/state. i live in NYC, so things are extremely expensive.

Because when you "die broke..." you won't need the $$$ after you are gone.
