If you paln to use it as you said for music and movies you must take into account the fact that 1.5 GB will be taken up by the operating system and drivers, probably another GB, at least, will be office (if you want to go with a full install), yet another GB will be consumed by other applications, and that only leaves 2.5GB to store all your movies and music and that is not enough. For your primary partition (the one where you install the OS) I would recommend a minimum of 20. To be on the safe side 40 GB should be enough if you also plan to get an external HDD drive or a CD/DVD wrighting solution.
PS: The best amount does not exist, get as much as you can and you can't go wrong by adding more (take innto consideration the fact thet laptops are a bit harder to upgrade than desktop computers - especially if you buy an older model)

Best amount? The bigger the better. 6 gb is not very large by today's standards. Average is in the 40-60 gb today. But it is enough to install Windows and a handful of really necessary programs with space left over for files (picture, music, etc.)
But I will predict that you will be out of disk space within 3-6 months. So hopefully this is not your only (or main) computer. If keep most of your "stuff" on the main computer, and only put what you have to have on the laptop it should work for you.

6gb would be ok for just surfing the internet as long as you don't download much, but you will be severely limited by it. For your needs, downloading music and such, you need a much bigger drive. Bigger is better. I have a 100gb drive in my laptop because I just don't want to run out of space. You'd probably be ok with 40gb as a minimum, or more if you can get it.
--------------
Windows XP requires a minimum of 1.5gb of hard drive space. With a 10gb drive that would leave you with 8.5gb to store other software and media files.
You could probably manage with a 10gb drive. If you do run out of space you can delete some or archive to cd (assuming you have a cd burner). Hope this helps!

It depends on what will you do with your laptop, then it also depend on the OS you're going to use. Windows XP needs at least 2 GB to operate smoothly. If you're going to use it for office use only, then it's no problem. But if you need some multimedia contents, then It's not sufficient. Use at least 20GB for multimedia, otherwise it's fine.

Depends on what purpose you are using it. if you are using it for gaming, then you need at least 40-80 GB. But if you are using it for business and networking purposes, you do not need to save many files in your laptop. Its all left to you!!!

Way too small. At least 80 gigs, more if you store a lot of photos and music.

There is no "Bad" amount of diskspace. 6gigs is fine if all you want to do is surf and write email.
If you plan on storing a lot of data (songs, pics, videos, etc) then you should go for more.
So.........the answer is: is depends on what you are going to use it for.
