Yes you can become addicted. As an instrumentalist, we are warned to stay away from products like Carmex because of the camphor and other products in the balms. These can break down your lip muscles over several years of use.
I have found one balm product that does not include camphor and is very gentle on the lips: Zim's Crack Creme. It can be used by diabetics, and all your friends will get a good kick out of you putting "crack creme" on your lips!

This is a debateable question. People say yes and some say no. Acutally you can become "dependent" on Carmex because it has menthol in it. When the "feeling" goes away, its very easy to pick it back up and use it again. MAC has an awesome lip conditioner in color shades as well as a neutral shade, Fresh has Lip Sugar that works just as Carmex, without the tingle. Murad has Energizing Pomergrante Lip Therapy w/ Sunscreen SPF 15 (which I recommend) because of the sunscreen, you won't need to apply it as much.

It is possible. And that stuff is not really good for your lips. It dries your lips out more than going without any lip moisturizer. It's the camphor and menthol that have drying effects. It would be better to use something without either of these. Products that are cocoa butter, vitamin E, A, or Aloe based work better.
I use Blistex's Daily Conditioning Treatment (DCT for lips). It comes in a tube and little jar just like Carmex but with out the bad stuff. It works really well, and I don't have to use it as much as I did Carmex.

Hey you don't get addicted, per say, but it is a habit. I have to have something on my lips all of the time otherwise they feel dry and uncomfortable. I like carmex and I think it keeps our lips soft. Don't worry about it...It's not going to kill you or anything. It may even keep your lips looking younger longer. God Bless from your Carmex friend!!!

Anything with petroleum, or petrolatum, will dry your lips out because it is not only a barrier from drying agents, but from moisturizing agents as well. Your lips cannot provide their own moisture, though, so try Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm. It is tingly just like carmex, but it goes deeper into your lips and does not make the skin dependant on it for moisture. I used to have chapped lips all the time no matter how much I put chapstick on (and thats probably why) but Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm has trained my lips to be virtually chap free!

Oh yes, darling, and it is not weird at all. I am a devout Carmex user...I have it in my desk, purse, car, backpack and probably 1000 spare tubes laying around the house. I use it fanatically and I think it is the best .89 beauty find in the world. Once you feel the smooth sensation on your lips, you can never stop.
My brother has the same problem, he carries it in his freaking pocket. So, don't fret, my friend, you are not alone. There are thousands addicted to Carmex. Or at least three of us!!!!

It's not weird. I'm addicted to it also. Just because you like your lips feeling really moist all the time dosn't mean you have a problem. It feels great and you like it, so what?
I'll be back in a minute...need to go put on carmex where ever I put it.

I think there is a web page directed to lib balm addiction. I did a speech in college about lib balm addiction. I also carry chap stick every day and feel lost without it. If you type lib balm anonymous in yahoo search you will find the web page that makes lite of this situation but there is a hint of truth, or at least they make it seem true.
