There are a lot of serious problems that need fixing.
Your opening question, asking if the U.S. Government works for Americans, leads me to answer: NO.
The government works for itself, it's own special interest groups and any business, social or religious group that feeds it cash.
President Bush showed signs of a good leader while Governor of Texas.
Once he entered the arena of Beltway politics, he was overwhelmed by the personal agendas of savvy bureaucrats.
I don't say this to excuse his decisions, because he is still Commander-in-Chief, meaning the buck stops with him.
But the dynamics of Washington politics is so great, one person cannot make a difference.
Still, the slow deterioration of civil rights over the past two decades, the lack of leadership, the ignorance of domestic problems all indicate that no party (Democrat or Republican) wants to take charge and work FOR the people.
Instead, the nation's leaders use a bait-and-switch method.
Problems with illegal immigrants?
Let's focus on gay marriage!
The economy and health care in ruins?
Let's drum up more funding for homeland security.
You get the idea.
Our leaders also use divide-and-conquer tactics to keep us polarized from working together to start a third party that might bring more accountability into government.
Think about it:
If you are Republican, you are automatically labeled neocon.
If you are a Democrat, then you must be a liberal.
No room for people with moderate views, those who work towards compromise, in the best interest of ALL people.
Bottom line:
elected officials find it easier to fool the public with some hot-button issue (remember flag burning?) rather than tackle serious problems.
Until we put aside our differences in social and religious issues and focus on domestic business, education, health care and infrastructure, we're doomed to go the way Rome did, centuries ago.
Only, this time, it will be the American people fiddling while this country burns to the ground.

We are busy trying to keep terrorist at bay in Iraq. If we just stayed home with the military after 9/11 then liberals would be screaming about why aren't we over there. Before Bush came into office we have always been sending money to other counrties. So it is not a Bush issue. It is an issue of how much government to be in our lives. We can also do our part on the homefront of keeping illegals out. We can report illegals from the workforce that we know of. We can give stiffer punishment for thoes that are hiring illegals.
We need to know our neighbors. we need to know if something unusual is going on and to report it. People just don't want to get involved makes us week. Too many people are always relying on the government. We need to start supporting the government no matter who is in charge and take a stand to help the government with these issues. We need to stop pointing a finger at the government because that isn't solving anything. We can vote! to get these incumbants who support illegals out! We have got to stop this I don't care attitude in america.

Boy, have you ever called this one right! I think our federal government is getting too big for its britches. The government is supposed to be by the people, for the people. Instead, it is take more from the people to fill the pockets of the lobbyists and politicians. I am fed up with it and am writing/emailing my congressman on EVERYTHING these days it seems. Here's a recent source of my outrage explained in great detail. I highly recommend you read the book if you, also, want to see some things change in DC and America as a whole. It is a quick, interesting read (I read it in just a couple of days).

I agree with you. Everyone thinks we are such a wonderful country full of wonderful people who have just splendid lives. Every country has its own set of problems. I guess that those are ours. I think that the cost of living is pretty ridiculous. I don't understand how certain towns and cities will be able to balance out their earnings in reference to the high cost of living. I just see it causing alot of problems. Also, whats up with the high cost of health care? Why should it be so hard for people to go to the doctor and stay healthy, its ridiculous. Don't even get my started on anything else...I will be here all day!

I completely agree with you. We need to take care of our own before we try to take care of everybody else.
