Sometimes if you don't manually turn off your printer (as in you leave it on all the time, like your computer) it can prematurely dry out the ink cartridges. I have a Lexmark printer and it will do this.
Also, when it reports the ink cartridges are low, usually there is more left than it makes you believe.

I have no knowledge of epson specifically but I believe
1) you don't have to change the cartridges right away when it says ink level low
2) If I'm not mistaken, the cartridges that come with the printer are only half full in most of the printer brands. So if you just bought the printer or never changed the cartridges before, don't panic and go buy a new set.
Good luck.

Remember the instructions on the shampoo bottle? "Lather. Rinse."
You know how you sell twice as much shampoo? Change the directions to "Lather. Rinse. Repeat."
Epson would only 'fix' the problem of showing low or no ink when the cartridge is still half full if they wanted to sell half as much ink.
You can save a huge amount of money by purchasing generic ink cartridges instead. There is absolutely no difference in quality, and the price is often as much a a half of the name-brand price. (Think Staples brand, or OfficeMax brand - that sort of thing. )
Good luck! - Stuart

When you buy a new printer with a manufacturer cartridge, it seems to last long and reads right on the level indicator on screen...No matter what brand you buy as a replacement, it always reads wrong. I feel it has to do with the calibration of the new cartridge after the set factory standards. As long As it is printing ok, I would just mentally note when I bought the new cartridge and keep an eye on it. I notice the same thing here with my Lexmark refill...it's a universal problem and I feel the manufacturers of replacements do not fill them as full as originals...Just my opinion!!!

I'm not sure if it is that type of printer, but I heard there is a printer when you buy it, it only comes with half the ink in it. sorry couldn't have been more help. O yeah, check and see if it isn't cheaper just to buy another printer. We just buy those $30 Lexmark.

Check out this lawsuit to see proof of what you are talking about. I'm not sure you will get a warning when the cartridges are half full, but it definitely happens before they are empty.

I think most printers do this actually. It's all about getting more money out of you.
