Um, it is a misnomer that drinking more water gets rid of edema, it just produces more edematous pathology. Remember water follows sodium. There are over the counter diuretics, but use them cautiously. Lasix, which is actually a naturally occurring medicine is the best thing to use, you then need to take some kind of potassium supplement, because with the excretion of water and sodium, your potassium will be excreted as well. It is always very wise to check with a doctor, they are trained professionals and can discover the underlying problem causing your edema. Solving the underlying problem is what you need to have done, otherwise you are simply treating symptoms, not causes.

There is no easy way out. Without knowing your health history nobody can answer your question appropriately. If you constantly retain water it could be kidney or heart related. In either case you need to go on a healthy diet, supervised by an alternative health care practitioner, like a naturopath, who could also strenthen your heart and/or kidneys with diffferent treatment protocols. Just taking diuretics will not solve the root cause of the problem, but will unbalance you in new ways. So, forget about an easy solution. You will have to become proactive.

Limit your sodium intake. The more sodium you consume, the more water you retain. Read lables, you will be suprised by how much sodium you consume each day.
The worst things for you to eat / drink where sodium is concerned are pre-packaged foods (from frozen dinners to pre made pasta sauces, etc.) and diet sodas. They are full of sodium to add flavor. Just read the labels and chose the items with a lower sodium content. Also limit your table salt. There are salt alternatives, but you have to be careful of those too.

Cut down on salt intake, which means cutting out or down on most prepared foods (check the nutritional chart on the package). There are some herbs that help: parsley, nettle, alfalfa, etc. If you use anything to get rid of the water (and salt) through increased urination, you probably need more potassium, which you can get through orange juice, bananas and some vegetables.

Take a diuretic. They help me with the cramping and bloating (water retention) during my period.
