That is just what Americans do. Rush to work, Rush at work, rush home, rush to eat, rush to sleep, rush in the car, rush to shop. Americans take less vacation time than any other industrialized nationl. Most workers complain that they don't have time to take a vacation. That's true! We don't. We are overbooked, overextended, and over worked. We schedule too many activities for our children and then complain that we have to drive Suzie to dance, piano, swimming, soccer, and softball practice.

In today's world, people are expected to "do it all" - work at work (and achieve stupendous financial success), work at home (and keep it spotless and well-decorated), work at the family (and be the perfect Mom or Dad - or Son or Daughter who succeeds in school), and have a hobby at which you excel. Plus we're expected to keep up with the news and "stay informed". It's no wonder people frequently feel they can't keep up!
What causes this? Lots of things - the Media, for one, which sings the praises of celebrities who "do it all" (and neglect to mention that each celebrity has a staff of 25 to do the shopping, the cleaning, the typing, the scheduling, etc., etc.); our families, who want us to succeed in every way and be the "perfect person", our friends, who love us and want to impose their way of doing things on us, because they think it's the best way, and professionals in various endeavors, because they're trained and they know how to DO things!
Most of us are just average, everyday people, and there is much to be said for that, because we are the backbone of this country. While celebrities enjoy attention and wealth, us ordinary folk are the ones who keep putting one foot in front of the other and keep on keepin' on.
So, in this frantic activity to keep up with what we are being told is expected of us, we maintain a mad pace to achieve what we are being told is success. Paul Simon wrote "Slow Down, You're Goin' Too Fast" and he was right on target. You are among many who find today's frenetic pace absurd and question the values that foster such a pace.
It is an odd thing, but when someone dies who is very close to you, the important things in Life automatically line up and you know, then, what the important things are - not money, nor public recognition, nor an expensive home, or clothes or cars, but love of family and the time to spend with that family. Family can be immediate relatives or friends who become extended family or co-workers who become family....the people who enrich your life.
At the end of our lives, we will remember the people we loved, and who loved us. And that's what matters - the Love we find, and keep, and cherish.
So it would be good for all of us to take some time to enjoy the sunset (and the sunrise) and spend time with a child learning about Nature, and call a friend and share a meal together (just a sandwich is fine), and so keep in mind the things that count.
When we go gently into that Good Night, we won't take cars or money or prestige - but the Love we shared goes with us. I hope you find much Love in your lifetime.

As technology develops and new discoveries are made, its takes less and less time to do things.
Thus, since things takes less time, we expect to get more done.
With 3 minute dinners, computers to speed up the daily work routine, and other such devices we as a society have started running, trying to cram as much as we can into a day.
Sadly, businesses and other such organizations expect us to move faster because of these devices, thus increasing workloads and make us work and move all the faster.
Trust me, its only going to get worse.
I blame the microwave.

Tell me about it. America is really the only place like that. In other countries they actually take naps at their jobs, but we gotta keep going. Production, deadlines, Nothing can cook fast enough so we are all fat from fast food. We don't have enough time with our children so other people are raising them and they are turning out to be heathens. I don't know why, but I hate it.

Time is a manmade concept and it is running way too fast for the health and wellbeing of the human being it was intended to aid.
