~Neither. What saves time is catching a quicker flight from a less busy airport. If you are wondering which time zone is in an earlier hour, duh, the sun sets in the west.

It sort of depends on which direction your destination is. If it's to the east, travelling east will save you time. :-)
Seriously, this is a matter of semantics. Except for at the International Dateline, timezones to the east will have clocks ahead, while time zones to the west will have clocks behind. But this is not much different than changing the clock for daylight saving time or back from it.
One phenomenon of east or west travel for long distances is jet lag. If you go east, your next day will come sooner, so you might have the sensation of wanting to go to bed when it's actually time to get up. Heading west, your next day will come later, and you'll want to fall asleep very early on and will probably wake up way before sunrise.

By travelling east to west, You will save 1 day each time You make a full circle around the Earth, because You will go "faster" than the Sun and eventually cross the date line before the Sun does. It is only relative thinking, because You will spend the same time on the road either way, i.e. You will get older for the same amount of time either way, but save 1 date (not a day).

It depends!!
From NY to LA the flight time is 6 hours into the prevailing west wind.
From LA to NY since there is a tail wind the plane fly’s faster so the flight time is 5 to 5.5 hours so you SAVE TIME going west to east. However,
If you leave NY at 9:00 and the flight takes 6 hours the time when you land in LA will be 3:00 NY time less 3 hours for the time difference or 12:00 LA time. So an argument can be made that it only took 3 hours. So you save time going East to West.
By the same token; If you leave LA at 9:00 and the flight takes 5 hours (remember the tail wind) the time in NY when you land is 2:00 LA time plus 3 hours for the time difference or 5:00 NY time, so it took 8 hours. So you lose time going West to East.
Things really start getting weird when you cross the international date line. When you travel from LA to Japan (West) you add a day. So you arrive in Japan tomorrow. So you lose time going east to west.
When you from Japan to LA you subtract a day, so you get home yesterday! So you gain time going West to East.
Go figure! Excellent Question.

Time continues to pass despite the changes in the time zones.
The only way to 'save' time is to travel at an increased velocity. If you were to travel at 100km per hour in any direction (east or west or north or south-southwest for that matter) for one hour you will travel 100km. You could travel at a higher velocity in either direction and you will achieve 100 km in a shorter amount of time and look at that as a time savings.

Like one of the other people said … it depends on the mode of travel.
On the ground or in the air makes a big difference.
I am assuming you mean in the air so there are 2 things that make the biggest difference.
To go faster:
Fly WITH the Earth’s rotation.
Fly WITH a tail wind (wind that is going in the direction you are).
The Earth’s rotation is the only reason we can get a ship into space. If we tried to launch the Shuttle AGAINST the Earth’s rotation it wouldn’t even come close to passing the Earth’s escape velocity.
The tail wind is the main reason that flying to Europe from the US (via the Atlantic Ocean) is faster than flying to the US from Europe. It takes about 9 hours 15 minutes fly to the US because of the strong prevailing Westerly wind that blows against the plane. It takes about 8 hours and 35 minutes to fly to Europe.
This tail wind concept is the same as you riding a bike INTO the wind or WITH the wind. Against the wind is always harder.

Travelling from east to west. Every 4 degrees of latitude you move westward, gives you an hour of time savings.

Man o man this is indeed a good question.Listen up when you are travelling from from USA to JAPAN and you cross the 180 degree longitude at midnight you are travelling from west to east.Calculate and you will find that you have skipped a day.If you travel from east to west you will have gained a day.Let's consider an example:
USA->tue JAPAN->wed ok.Now suppose the clock shows 12:00a.m
when you cross the longitude then after crossing japan is thusday. So when you came it was tuesday and now it is thusday and you have skipped wednesday.Try to explain simmilarly how you gain a day(You have to spend two wednesdays).
