Now, we find out that the whitehouse is spying on financial records, in addition to phone records. Senator Joe McCarthy did this same thing during the red scare, and ruined several people's lives. When are we going to stop this?

Turboweenie, McCarthy was not a myth! OMG, you are misled! He ruined several people's lives with his communist witch hunt, and he did it using the same scare tactics you are trying to use now! He encouraged people to spy on their neighbors, because there are communists right in your backyard! IT IS THE SAME THING! And, if you don't think that is dangerous, how can you believe in freedom? Honestly! And one more thing, the IRS does not have bank account or loan information on me. And, the whitehouse asked 2 newspapers to please not report on this. WTF is going on in this country?!?!?!!???!!!!!!

It never occurred to me that you guys who support Bush (thank god you aren't the majority) would also have supported someone as vile and insane as Joe McCarthy. Now I see haw crazy you are.

It would seem not in many cases, especially viewing some of the responses about this question. Lack of historical or historical amnesia is a big problem.

Reminds me of the quote, "in order to save them, we had to kill them.' It seems we have to kill civil liberties in order to keep civil liberties.

Apparently, too few people actually understand what McCarthy was and how he fit into the anti-Communist efforts that had long been going on under HUAC.

As for financial records - the IRS already has your financial records. The government has this data already, so there is no invasion of privacy going on.

But trying to make McCarthy the only thing about the anti-communist effort in the US is as distorted an image of the whole truth as saying the government is 'spying' without getting into the larger truth that this is in support of the war effort.

Our enemy does not operate in the open, and there may be many already in our country. To not use every available means to find them would be a failure of the highest order.

This is not being done in a vaccuum. And comparing it to the myth of McCarthyism is disingenuous and intellectually dishonest.

If you had better reading comprehension, you would have understood that I said that the common perception of McCarthyism is a myth.

1. The anti-communist work had been going on for years before the drunken blowhard liar McCarthy jumped on the bandwagon.
2. The anti-communist work was in response to the growing internal threat of communist stooges, like the Rosenbergs who gave US secrets to Stalin, and like Alger Hiss, who really was a soviet spy.
3. It wasn't a witch hunt, because nobody who wasn't a communist was labelled as a communist. The Hollywood 10 were long time members of the communist party who were using their positions as writers to advance the communist cause. They were blacklisted by Hollywood moguls, not the govt.

The myth is that it was all McCarthy and that it was all lies. But liberals are wed to the myth, not the reality. Like their 'there were no WMDs' myth, like 'Bush was AWOL' myth, etc.

Your rewriting of history comes right out of the Ministry of Truth.

McCarthy was a different scenario, communism was a real scare and more of the public participated in reporting their neighbors and friends. Now you have a government that is spying on the people with little help from the public.

Maybe when al-quaida is finished? Hear about that 9/11 deal? I think maybe that has something to do with your question.

I dare you to google "Venona Papers" You'll see evidence from Russia concerning soviet spies in the US, spies that Joe M. was investigating.

Apparently not. Considering I've been called a communist more times than I can remember.

We're not. When a government is trying to stop a "threat" of any sort, it's going to create a defensive mode of thought. Which leads directly to paranoia and fear about that "threat". Human nature is to destroy, especially that which we fear.
