Furniture cleaning back in your parents' day was work. You opened a bottle of polish, you spread stuff on, you used 'elbow grease' to polish a high gloss on wood, and you learned to not touch the furniture more than necessary so you wouldn't have to polish so often.

Welcome to the 21st century. Grab a spray can or bottle of Murphy's Oil Soap and a damp sponge. For the really dirty wood, spray it on and let it sit for a few minutes while you watch a soap opera. It's just a wipe off thing.

Once the wood's pretty much clean, use a furniture polish like Pledge aerosol and a soft (think old t-shirt, old socks kinda soft) cloth. Spray, wipe, make a few polishing moves to impress the neighbors, and enjoy a whole new look to the furniture.

Enjoy! - Stuart

I would suggest using Pledge furniture polish, I am a professional cleaner and my experience has shown this to be the best furniture polish. As for the build up it may also be the wood that is causing it. When polishing the wood try spraying the polish onto a rag and then rubbing it on. Also try to buff out the excess polish with a clean rag.

OK, 1st off don't put water on the wood, it will ruin it. I use Orange Glo, once a month to moisturize the wood, then use a swifter duster weekly. If it is pressed wood, like most of the less expensive pieces, use pledge. The orange glo will actually attract the dust since it can be absorbed in the pressed wood. Trick, you can repel dust by taking a drier sheet wipe it over like the TV screen.
If you have wood floors, use Murphy's oil soap.
If you have linoleum, I like Mr. Clean, or orange Pine Sol. If these leave streaks, its to concentrated. You can always use vinegar to clean just about anything. Vinegar works well on tile floors.
When cleaning glass, wipe with a paper towel or wotted up newspaper, sounds funny but won't leave streaks.

It depends on what furniture you have.

Lets say every part needs his own cleaner. Talking wood, leather, upholstery here not seats and legs. Even different leather may need a different type of treatment.

As a rule you never use water...ever. It will always stain. Yes water stains. Specially on wood and leather.

There are different kind of creams around: BE SURE you use the right one. How to use? read the bottle. It also differs per cream. My mom once did the leather of my grans chairs with suntanoil. It works but I would not recommend it.

And you wondered why there were profesional cleaners around? Oh yes, it can be very complex.

I have water with a dash of vinegar in a spray bottle. It'd cheap and works wherever you are in the world. But don't use on Marble!
