I think it is due to a spasm in your diaphragm. If you breathe in real slowly and then exhale real slowly a couple of times it can stop your hiccups.

hiccup is caused by unnatural breathing or when air doesnt enter your lungs properly. this can happen when you are eating too quickly.therefore when you start getting hiccups, drink water continuosly for 5 seconds.the hiccups will stop.

there is something in the esophagus(dont know the name) but it is supposed to be facing down and when you have hiccups because it has turned upwards.
the best remedy is a bite of peanut butter or potato salad or anything thick like that.
swallow a whole bite at once and that will get rid of them.

I found massaging just under your rib cages and along both sides while inhaling and holding your breath for a few seconds works for me more so than drinking water and trying to be scared.

an air pocket somewhere that it shouldn't be; drink water without breathing and jump up and down. Sometimes it works. Or you can get someone to scare you. That definitely works. You've got to pop that little bubble in there.
