If you live in the south the tree you are talking about is a bradford pear tree, or it could be red tip photina.

Haven't smelled those trees, but there is a section on HWY99 about 20 mils south of Modesto that smells horrific. When I complained about it and couldn't describe the horrific sent, I was told apparently you have never smelled crotch rot. Now that ha got to beet the semen tree smell by far. Apparently it is a chicken processing plant and in the summer it is horrid. I have a hard time eating chicken now. GROSS !!!!! I feel your sensory pain LOL But the flower that smells like dead bodies has got them both beat. I have smelled that one. My old landlord grew them and sold the bulbs on-line for a fortune.

YES!! It's the flowers on a certain sort of tree or bush. Not sure the name, but if you smell it and see these white flowers, go and smell them...it's AWFUL!
