its a term that usually means that someone has disappeared, in that they ESCAPED... coming from the fact that harry"houdini" was the great escape artist/magician of the depression ERA. you often hear the term used in "cop movies" , we had the suspect cornered in the back room , but when we broke in he pulled a houdini act out through a hole in the floor"....
