it would be cheaper to run the window unit If you want to cool just one room. Make sure that the filter in the front of the unit stays clean or should I said that you have a filter. What is the size of the window unit in BTU's? What is the size of the room you want to cool? Do you have a whole house unit (central air)? What size is that? Size of the home?

Answer these and I can help you more.

a lot depends on the variables. is your house new or old? is your climate hot and damp, like Houston, or hot and dry like tuscon? or is it cool and damp like new york city or chicago?

central air cools the entire house and just by default is more expensive than trying to cool just one room. if you were trying to cool an entire house central is the way to go.
