This is a plan for just after I retire, so I'm starting now. I know there's official paths in some parts of the country, but is there a legit way to go all the way from Ohio to Key West without violating some laws?

OK, my point is this. I want to AVOID the highways. I want to walk on pedestrian walkways as much as possible. The Appalacian trail would be part of the trip, I'm sure. I'm looking for the rest of the path. I don't even know how to research it.

Forget about the AT - your closest point to it is Harper's Ferry WV , the AT then heads SW over a lot of mountains to a spot north of Atlanta, not a good idea. I don't know if you can even walk over the bridges going to the Keys. If you expand your requirements a wee bit to include abandoned railroad lines and dirt roads and fire roads you may be able to cobble a reasonable voyage together. look into historic trails,Thur state trails . hiking organizations National Park service. In all likely hood you'll figure it out and get it done still....... there is 7 mile bridge

try this.... walk east until you hit the Appalacian trail. It will take you south to georgia and from there you can walk on the coast towards Key West. (the coast is good because there is always cheap tourist motels to stay at and plenty of places you could get something you need.

or

take a train and do laps around your car ;)

good luck
god bless+

Buy a map.
Try to use the state highways.
They should have less traffic than the US highways and the interstates.

try mapquest. or rand mcnally streets and trips (tripmaker). I think on one of them you can choose the "scenic route" function. I would definitely say that some sort of travel software would be your best bet because then you can try different routes to see what will be most exciting.

You will have to plan your walk state-by-state. Here is a good place to start your research: http://www.americantrails.org/resources/statetrails/

Good luck and have fun!
