A lot of people are not used to grammatically correct writing, especially when on a chat line, im, or message board. A lot of people may speak correctly but when it comes to writing, they mix up some of the basic rules, hence "your" and "you're".
Lets teach,
your is a possessive pronoun. "This is your day"
you're is a contraction of the words you and are, meaning you are. "Boy, you're gonna get it when dad gets home!"

It's not exactly that they don't know the difference, although many may not, it's what my husband and I call Bubonic Laziness.
I mean honestly... does it cost that much trouble to press the shift key and capitalize the beginning of sentences? Or hit the Check Spelling when you're done typing?
I, for one, believe that this society relies way too much on spell check. That is, spell check is the exact reason why we are becoming so bad at spelling. Since both of the spellings you used are in fact correct, spell check will not alert you to a mistake. What you would need in that case is a grammar check, which most word processing programs now possess, but not Yahoo Answers.
I don't know if you can remember, but before calculators and computers.... We had to do our own math - with only the help of...PARENTS and TEACHERS!!!! GASP! I know scary.
The other reason may be that for the people answering the questions, and using the wrong form of the word, English is not their native language.

I think mostly people are just lazy, it's shorter and faster to type "your" instead of "you're". You don't need to use the apostrophe and most people get you anyway (although they probably think you're dumb for not knowing the difference).
So, this thing of saving letters and being understood anyway is bad for us, because we become so tolerant and so used to the misspellings that we might start misspelling ourselves after a while.

We (teachers) are still teaching grammar and spelling I assure you. I think with the quick pace of im and emailing, people just assume that others will get the gist of their message and think correct spelling is not that important. However, it really is important to use grammar and spelling correctly when submitting anything to anyone in writing. Same thing goes for there, their, and they're.

You're asking a good question, so I will offer a little input for your edification.
Two reasons:
1. Stupid
2. Lazy

I think it's more stupidity than laziness. It drives me nuts. Along with people not knowing the difference between their, they're, and there; to, two, and too, and it's and its. It makes me believe we are no longer teaching grammar in schools anymore!
