They can't stand us. We saved their behinds twice from being slaves. They have not tried to even thank us-they have a severe guilt complex and they are too proud to deal with it.

Where are you reading these opinions? There is a lot of bashing in general in this site. If it's elsewhere, consider who is publishing it and whether they might have an agenda of their own.

Sometimes what appears to be bashing is just a matter of humour and differences in intention. Scots and Irish folk are known for 'slagging,' friendly insults delivered to those in their circle -- if you're not targeted, you're not yet one of the group! Gentle, and not so gentle, jibes are part of normal banter. But if a U.S. American said something similar, the intention would be almost definitely be derogatory. It took me years to become comfortable with this; I still have problems doing it myself, even though I know it will help me fit in socially.

Some Europeans play a lot on irony and U.S. Americans tend to miss it. I think it is very true that U.S. people take themselves too seriously, which leads to all sorts of misunderstandings. And sometimes the target is just too tempting. :-)

Beyond that, read through this replies here. It does get tiring listening to U.S. Americans (whether they're on-line punters or televised pundits) rattle on endlessly about how fantastic their country is.

You know, I think that Europeans feel that people from U.S. have a superiority complex just the same way. Both European countries and the U.S (America is the continent, right?) have different culture and act on very different motifs.

When Europeans look to their past when judging, deciding and thinking - People from the U.S look to the future. Theoretically this is two different ways of thinking.

It's not right to decide which is better. These are cultural matters and people get on the defence.

True, but it is always sooo tempting. Americans generally leave themselves wide open to it and when I do it I just always fall into that same trap, I assume they are educated. What makes it even easier is the fact that they lead such sheltered lives as well. I was about to take a massive side swipe but decided it would only cause further controversy that we don't need. The Americans are our allies, just look at how much friendly fire we take from them. Plus it is sooo nice of them to try and teach me, an Englishman, to spell in American with their spell checker.

I dont think it's a superiority complex. It's simply they 've been around longer and they are superior. PLus Americans are the only nation who went to decadence after their founding without going through ths stage of civilization. (And that was said by a great American and not myself)

While it is true that there does seem to be a lot of "Yank bashing" going on in society these days I think the Americans do bring a lot of it upon themselves. Witness the president. Witness Iraq. Witness the lack of knowledge of other countries. I think what gets up a lot of people's goat is the sheer lack of WANTING to improve their worldly knowledge. They seem happy to live in their cocoon and talk about McD's and their latest gas-guzzling monster of a car.

In every country around the world you will find persons who have a superiority complex over americans and other INTELLIGENT PERSONS WHO DON´T.
It´s not exclusively in Europe.

It's the same arrogance that lead them to two World Wars. It's also likely to assist them in producing another major global conflict.
