dont jump to conclusions. you never know if the baby will learn any more words anytime soon.

My twin girls starting talking very early. They had a six word vocabulary at 6 months of age. They said Mama, Dada, Light, Hat, and Hi. By the time they were 12 months old they had quite a vocabulary and amazed everyone. There isnt a time that I cant remember them talking.
They are now 7 years old and just finished the 1st grade. They are average students with strengths in Math. Both went to reading help the beginning of the year. They are "bright" little girls with a lot of talent for singing, acting, and dancing.
My point is that all of our children have strengths in one area or the other. My girls did speak early but as far as academically is concerned they are "average"....They have talents "smarts" in other areas...
Good Luck.

You're the smart one. Dada!! This means that in the early hours of the morning, when you're trying to sleep, your baby will call for Dada and not Mumma, so you get to stay in bed. Good on you. Keep it up.

With my two sons, dada and baba were the first "words" they said. I think because they're easy sounds to say, but they have no idea what they're saying. My older son didn't actually associate the word "dada" with his father until he was about a year old.

I would say he is just babbling. I have a 6 month old son and he has said dada a few times but he was just babbling or mimicking me. Does he directly associate seeing his daddy and then saying the word?

Totally normal, my daughter was 14 mths and able to speak sentences, my son is 10 mths and can say a few words, it is possible, it all matters on how much time is spent working with them. The best way to get them to start saying words is to when there eyes are watching your mouth say words that are easy for them to say ex: mama dada baba as they watch your mouth that is how they learn to speak is mimicking our movements with our mouths, it works.

It is his first word...but he doesn't know what it means yet. My 8 month old girl is up to 6 words now and only knows what 2 of them mean - and that is really good. Your baby is smart, and will continue to amaze you if you keep talking and singing to him.
Dada is usually the first word, and it's usually at 7 months (he is early) and mama should follow soon.

Odds are this is babbling, and baby hasn't attached much meaning to it yet. Sorry to disappoint. But he or she will catch on that some sounds get a big reaction, like "dadada" or "mamama" and keep going with them, and eventually the connection will be made. Babies make all kinds of noises. They're not necessarily words.

My first child could say 10-15 words by his first birthday, and no he isn't a genius. My youngest one didn't say much at all and he is the smartest one. So, no, just cuz you baby can say dada, doesnt mean he will solve AIDS by his second birthday.

My daughter learned to say "mommy" by the time she was 6mos. She's grown up into the most intelligient 2 year old I've ever met!
SO I would say....yeah... and..it couldn't hurt to nurture that intelligience a little bit..or a lot. Every minute of the day offers a chance for you to teach your kid more and more about the world around him. Teach him/her what things are, what they do, and if they should/shouldn't touch things.
