The name of a fly/insect?

I and many other people would call them midgies, but what is their real name, little flies that mostly come out at night but not always, they seem to bit but its more of an itch, everyone must have come across them while BBQ or camping when they get in your ears and up your nose, basically I need a killer or repeller but would also like the name of these wee tortures..

We call them Sand Flies here - and we stock up on an antihistemine prior to camping. Phenergan is the name of the small pill which takes the itch out of the bites. I came across this lady who has concocted her own remedy in a bottle. Her email address is [e-mail] She lives in a small country town in the north west of West Australia. People swear by her lotion. Might be worth contacting her if you want to be bite free outdoors.
