My ex-wife had it done. She was morbidly obese and had tried dieting for over 30 years.
The surgery was rapid and she was home in less than 2 days. For several weeks she could only tolerate very small amounts of food. She's lost about 150 lbs. but has hit a plateau, mostly because she never exercises.
Don't expect miracle cures. Losing a great deal of weight in the space of a couple of years can leave you with large amounts of sagging skin. Cosmetic surgery can fix this problem, but it's added expense. In addition, some people remain compulsive eaters even after having the surgery, with the result that their new smaller stomach stretches to accomadate the extra food. This is failure. In addition, many people think that with such a reduction in caloric intake that they won't have to exercise. Wrong. Exercise is a vital part of the strategy.

I know 4 people who have done this. Of the 4; all of them lost a lot of weight during the first 6 months. It has been more than a year for all of them. 3 of the 4 have reverted to their old eating habits and started to gain weight again.
