Walking. For my lower disc problem which sometimes causes muscle spasm, a PT gave me a modified pushup to arch the back. Start out like a push up then lift your upper body up on your hands but leave your abdomen on the ground. The goal is get high enough to be able to lock your elbows in straight. Hold the position as long as you can and then go back to the ground. It's designed to pull the disc back into place realizing any nerve decompression which is probably causing your spasms.

First, go to a doctor.

Back pain can be caused by Kidney disease or other life threatening issues.

If all is well (except for the back that is) you could always do your body good by stretching those hamstrings.

Lay out on your back on the floor, and one at a time bring your knees up to your chest slowly. Hold position for a few secs. and repeat with your other leg. This will stretch the very long hammy that is attached from way up in the hip area all the way down to the knee.

When the hamstring is tight or spasming, it will pull at your hip throwing it out of position and that will cause you to stand/walk off balance thus----------making your spine bend out of shape thus-----------pinching nerves and causing pain.

So keeping your hammys long and relaxed gives you a stress free spine and less back pain.

p.s. menstruating women will find that their muscles weaken during their cycle every month causing additional stress on their spine

I find that crunches, like a partial sit up, do a lot to help with both lower and upper back pain.
