a pimp, a drug dealer, a car thief, then aren't they the same? Where does this leave the black men who are dedicated to their education, good grades, and skilled trades or profession? If "street cred" leads to millions, what message are black people sending out? Wouldn't a gangsta be more of an Uncle Tom , an oreo, a sellout because he is conformring to a white racist stereotype?

The thought actually struck me while I was watching Chamillionaire's "Ridin", where he mentions racial profiling. The gangsta IMAGE sells, and if white people are profiting from that, that makes them just as guilty. Look at all the suburban white kids that buy into it too: it's not all innnercity black kids. And not everyone buys it either. I"m starting to believe that is a white corporate manipulation of the black culture.

Just one more black racist blaming whites for the criminal behavior of black people. An intelligent African American would not believe that whites are to blame for thier problems. They would believe in individual responsibility, like any good American. Thinking like this condones black crime and perpetuates it into the future.

I agree. When someone from the ghetto tries to better themselves through education and getting a good job they call that person a sell out, a wanna be white. But I don't think it's about wanting to be white; I think it's about not wanting to be a drug dealer and the desire to be a hard working individual.
Yes. When someone truly believes that the only thing they can do is deal drugs or join a gang to survive then they are the sell outs, the ones who are fulfilling the racists dream of keeping a black person down.

A gangster as an Uncle Tom giving up his goals and dreams just because of racial stereotyping is sad but true.
Too often,Black people do not have a good role model to follow because of this.
But l thank God for the prominent places people like Condi Rice and Colin Powell have attained...brings vision to many....

hush don't say those things out loud....it's the racist propaganda, put out by people who need to believe, that only black men are criminals. let these groups have their fantasy and just look around you, to see how men of other races are criminals too. just look at which ones control the methamphetamine drug trade. ephedrine is manufactured legally in mexico, illegally smuggled into the usa and used to make crystal meth. which is mostly made, sold and consumed by whites. so what does that tell you? no matter what your opinion or mine is, the world goes on.
if stereotypical "white" crimes are on the rise such as child pornography, consumer fraud and an inbred sense of entitlement (that's a crime to me)....what messages are white people sending out? i guess we will just have to decide for ourselves, what is true and what is hype about the people we deal with ...no matter what their race is. don't lose any sleep over this mindset....i won't.

As an African American female I would like to say.....Thank you for bring this issue up. I can't tell you how long i've been screamin about this.
I'll tell you what I know. Alot of problems in the Black community have to do with the destitute and despair that are in their neighborhoods. It's really hard to be motivated to be a better person and to want better things for yourself when you're surrounded by chaos every single waking day of your life. For alot of black men it's normal to start selling drugs and carring guns at a very young age. Alot of the problems start in the home. Mothers are very young and are usually raising children with no fathers around. ( Just like me ). Children go looking for role models and find nothing but gangs and drug dealers. So they cling to that. Another thing is that it's gotten to the point where black people don't like to see other black people succeed. Black girls are jelous of other black girls because they have no self esteem or self worth.
Another thing black people need to stop doing is to stop complaining and get off their a** and do something about their conditions. Raise up. Let their voices be heard. V O T E ! Babies need to stop having babies. Alot of girls ( no matter what race...girls are looking for that male figure in their lives because of bad relationships with their fathers or no fathers being around at all ). I love being black. I love my people. We are a beautiful race. Black women are beautiful and Black men are strong. We just need to band together to create change. Alot of black people have lost their hope. We just need our hope back.

I DON' THINK THAT WHEN PEOPLE ARE COMMITTING THESE CRIMES THEY ARE THINKING A BOUT BEING ROLE MODELS FOR THE BLACK COMMUNITY. MOST PEOPLE WHO COMMIT CRIMES ARE ALREADY REJECTS OF SOCIETY, AND DO NOT CARE ABOUT ANYONE ELSE BUT THEMSELVES.....HOWEVER. HAVING SAID THIS BLACK MEN ARE NOT THE ONLY ONES COMMITTING CRIMINAL ACTS. AND YOUR QUESTION SEEMS RACISTS AND YOU ARE STEREOTYPING BLACK PEOPLE IN GENERAL .. EVERYONE HAS TO BE LOOKED AS AN INDIVIDUAL , MY FATHER, AND MY TWO BROTHERS ALL HAVE COLLEGE DEGREES, NEVER DONE DRUGS, AND HAVE NEVER BEEN ARRESTED FOR ANYTHING, AND THEY ARE DEFINITELY BLACK; AND HAVE NEVER BEEN CATEGORIZED AS ANY TYPE OF GANGSTA'. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT YOU ARE CATEGORIZING BLACKS, OR ALL BLACK MEN BECAUSE OF THE CRIMES OF OTHERS. HOW WOULD YOU LIKE IT IF ALL WHITE PEOPLE WERE CATEGORIZED OR STEREOTYPED AS SERIAL KILLERS, AND CHILD MOLESTERS, BECAUSE THE ONES IN HISTORY WHO HAVE BEEN ON TRIAL FOR THESE CRIMES WERE CERTAINLY WHITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND FURTHERMORE IF SOMEONE JUST AS YOU SAID IS A WHITE RACISTS, THEY WILL NOT LIKE ME OR MY FAMILY JUST THE SAME AS THE GANGSTAS ON THE STREET. BECAUSE FOR ONE THING BEING A RACISTS MEANS THAT SOMEONE DOES NOT LIKE YOU BECAUSE OF THE COLR OF YOUR SKIN, NOT BECAUSE YOU COMMITTED A CRIME.

It certainly seems that the black person who falls for this claptrap is playing right into the hands of white racists.
