Naturally their diets are mostly made of aquatic plants and every now and then animal matter.
If the goldfish is just a comet you should feed it goldfish flake NOT tropical flake. Tropical flake has a pH level that it too hard on the fish's digestive system.
If you have a fancy goldfish (i.e. oranda, ryukin, moor, telescrope and etc.) then they should only eat goldfish pelleted food. Reason being is that flake good screws up their swim bladder since their bodies are so compact. The flake food will absorb oxygen...the pellets will not.

These little flakes that you could buy at your local pet store. Or you can feed them tiny tiny TINY pieces of bread. You should know you have to give them it a little bigger than crumbs, they won't eat the whole bread! Oh, you can also give goldfish like pieces of worms, because a whole worm is too big for them to eat. Those other people, I don't think they were listening when you said goldfish.

Well there's the obvious which is goldfish food but they also like deshelled peas, brine shrimp, blood worms, broccoli and many others. Try experimenting with different fresh foods just don't give them anything that would make us sick.

anything, even eachother.
once, i had a goldfish that had problems with floating upside down like it was dead, and the other fish thought it really was dead, so it ate all of the fins off of the one that was floating.

Some like flakes, some like sinker pellets.
Don't bother with a fancy steak; they have no hands to hold the utensils
