The battery on a cell phone has a memory to it. If the battery doesn't start out being drained and then fully charged, it will never work very well. For example, if you got a new battery and you charged it for half the time necessary, your battery would retain that information as its full life. Then, from then on, you would only be using half the capacity of the battery. I hope that makes sense. That is how the cell phone place explained it to me when I complained about my battery. They also told me that once in a while to let my phone battery run down to the point where my phone is about to shut off, to ensure it is working properly.

Beacuse the battery is brand new and it has no power at all in it, so once you charge it it has power left in it for the next charge and it wont take as long as the first charge. I think you should let new things charge for about 12 hours, or you can read the manual that comes with it and they usually specify how long you should let the battery charge.
