Yes they do. Of course. That is where they got the saying. However, it is a defense mechanism to prevent being eaten for a predator will not eat an animal that acts sick. If the animal drops dead, the predator will think he was diseased before he got there. He is not playing. He is actually not even conscious. In oppossums, when they are terrorized with fear, all the blood rushes away from their head and they actually pass out.

Opossums in fact do play opossum. That's how it got started. Do you think it was just a random coincidence? They play dead to fool predators. I think they can actually also recreate the scent? I'm not sure about that bit though.

yes the play possom when they hear something so what ever it is will think they are dead.

Yeah and someone told me they like to play strip poker. Now why ANYONE would watch a oppossum play strip poker is beyond me but that's another story for another day.

Yes, they play dead to avoid actually winding up that way around their predators! Hence the term! ...and it's spelled possum.
