Get a fancy rat! They can live in a fairly small cage and they're smart and like to be taken out and played with! They're very active and affectionate unlike some other small animals. Also, they're very affordable to purchase (usually under $10) and also to maintain (food, etc.) Other animals like hedgehogs and sugar gliders are great too but in some states you'll need a permit for them and they're much, much more expensive.

Depending on where you live. Ferrets are the best small unusual animal. Absolutely hilarious antics when roaming around the house and sleep in cage. Are also litter box trainable.

what i think - unusual pets with standard space requirements and ammount of care necessary comparable to dog/cat (but of course not qualitatively the same):
mammals - sugar gliders, african hedgehogs, running out of ideas. My only mammal is a porcupine, but she lives in the garden, it needs failsafe confinement very cute and easy care
then racoon or coati - absolutely cool, especially coatis are so fun. but need some place to put it, IF you can accomodate it, i would be for a COATI in the garden plus a little corner in the house, undoubtedly. THYE ARE JUST IRRESISTALBE, once u establish proper place for them (the poo smells, the day to day care is very basic, like dogs. so the overall care requirements is definitely not more than for a dog
birds: hill mynah or african grey parrot or toucan - very inteligent, really something - wish i had any of them, but i have already enough pets
reptiles: a chameleon or anoli or a snake or tortoise of your choice or a larger gecko of your choice(Gecko gecko, Phelsuma madagascariensis grandis etc..) bearded dragon - I have two reptiles. any reptile is an unusual pet and you can find a stunning animals that dont require actually a professional zoo owner for its care - once u establish terrarium and buy the fittings, you can have some of the more difficult, (same goes for arrow tree frogs or other frogs ), the more easy to keep are suitable even for small kids - leopard geckoes.
or a scorpion, mantis, walking sticks, tarantulas, giant millipedes - if u like these, their space / care requirements are next to none, while they ARE unusual, to be sure.
i dont think of any water dwelling animals, sort of not my cup of tea, but we should not forget them

Hedgehog- I have not owned one myself but I am told they are very sweet and do not require much space/exercise (comparatively). Check out this link.
