You're quite right, it's not just a story about bunnies. And it is a great book. His other book is Shardik, about a bear... you should read that too. And there is a really good animated version of WD available on video... they kept true to the book (not really suitable for little kids).

Yes! Many,many moons ago.
It was a N.Y. best seller at that time.

The plot: Heeding the warning of a vision of their old home's destruction, a group of rabbits led by Hazel, his brother Fiver the visionary, the ever inventive doe, Blackberry, and Bigwig, a former member of their old home's military class, go in search of a new home. With the help of new found friends like Kehaar the gull and Hannah the mouse, Fiver's vision leads them to a home called Watership Down. Now, Hazel and his friends must establish their warren and protect it from the threats they face which include humans, predators, and especially the menace of a tyrannically militaristic warren led by the merciless General Woundwart.

I agree with your totalitarianism theme.
Another book "Animal farm" has the same theme.

I couldn't read it as the film gave me the creeps. It was the first film that I watched when I was young that showed death in a fairly graphic way (when the bunny gets caught on the wire and cuts it thoat) and also I will always remember the bunny getting taken away by the bird. And the fields of blood. I will never let my kids watch that as it gave me nightmares and my friend could not sleep in her room for about a month after watching it.

It is a little graphic for small children, my father wanted me to get the movie for the grandkids, I just laughed and said no. He got really upset with me, and never really understood why I thought the blood and death were too much for a 4 1/2 and 3 year old to watch.

No, but I'd like to. I've seen the movie though. Brilliant animation; it's available on DVD.
