I ask myself that.
Ok, he WAS a great football player but they all take him as a god, and he's far from being perfect. He considers himself much too highly and is a bad example for all people, especially argentinian (no offense, but they copy everything they see).
He's fat and a druggie. He's hated by pretty much the whole world and the idiot has the nerve to ask for more gratitude.
He doesn't do anything, and I laughed so hard when he tried to show his abilities in football a year ago on TV.
I completely hate that from Argentina (a country that I love by the way). I mean, there's even a church for Maradona, books called "Yo soy el Diego" and stores that are based only in that fat guy.

Once he even got mad because in an european country (I don't remember which) they didn't receive him as high as he expected. They treated him as any other person, but no, he had to be treated as if he was a god.

Maradona is celebrated as anational hero because he was an Argentinian.Had it been an English player doing what he did, the English press would have murdered him with loads of abuses and criticism.Yes,the people would have been happy by the result that refree has not picked it up but who can keep the English press quiet.
But still, apart from that very unproffesional incident we can't blame Maradona as a player. And his goal against England in the World Cup is the Goal of the century.
Not the one he scored with his hand but the one in which he ran from the half-line with the ball to score.

I am from Argentina, and I don't "celebrate" Maradona. He was a great footballer, true. You English tend to focus only on the drugs and the Hand of God, and forget that he scored many *other* goals with his feet.

As for the Hand of God, I don't condone it. When I learned that was how we won in '86 (I was a baby when it happened), I was actually saddened that something like that had to happen, but really...get over it.

Didn't the Dutch just admit that the penalty that disqualified Argentina in 1998 wasn't actually a penalty? There are other countries who got lucky with the refs, not just us.

I'll thank you to not tar every Argentine with the same brush, thanks. We're not all blind worshippers of Maradona, and we can support our national team without turning into cheating cokeheads.

Actualy he is considered a cheater only in England. The rest of the world knows him as football genius, probably the best player ever to play the game. Mind you if he was playing for England at the final I dont think there would be any shouts of cheater from the english fans. Just remember the 66 cup goal in the final against Germany. All the world knows it was out and England 'cheated' but no one talkes about it hear do they?

I am not English and even I am annoyed watching the Hand of god (no capitals please) moment over and over again. And then just saying it's not cheating, come on ! Why do they celebrate him as a national hero? Good question. He's a cheater, a user of coke and friends with unlikely characters such as Fidel Castro. I cannot see why you would worship such a person...

The Argentinians wanted to reserve the no. 10 for Maradona and never use it again. FIFA prevented that fortunately.

Let's hope there's no ticker tape parade in Buenos Aires this year.

Maradona is legend, if u don't remember in the same match he scored by his hand he scored an amazing goal is the best ever goal a player could score, he make the english players look like kids in the pitch tryin to get him or take the ball from him but no chance boy coz he is the magician MARADONA.

Because, barring one incident against our beloved country, the man was a genius on the field, that same match he produced a goal which anyone on Earth would be jealous of, dribbling round our solid defense and scoring a stunner. If, for example, Owen had done the same 'hand of god' in the semis of the last world cup and then we went on to win the cup, would we be bothered about it or would we simply celebrate his genius and how good a football team we had and deserved the win? i think think we would do the latter :)

I think English are jealous about Maradona and in terms of the hand of God, I saw many hands of god in the premier league+ I saw Owen trying the hand in an england match once. + How can Maradona who is just 1,64 m tall take the ball of peter shilton who is maybe 1,90 m.
+Isn't kicking a player from behind like beckham did to simeone in '98 also cheating?

It is not only the English who hate Maradona. He is hated in Italy also, apart from in the city of Naples. This is because when he played for Naples, he told the the people that they should support Argentina and not Italy in the World Cup, and said that all of Italy hated Naples.

Which is maybe true, but still he should not have said that. He is a fat lump and a junkie.

Being English no one person annoys me more than Maradona

However as far as him being a national hero in argentina goes the man was pure genius.

The only person in the world who can be spoke in the same breathe as Pele in my opinion.

Plus his cheek and bias opions is the reason his nation love him so.

Althought he probably is the worse role model in the world when you look what hes achieved you can instantly understand why he deserves hid title as Argentinas biggest national hero.

If Rooney plays half as good as Maradona in his prime for the rest of the world cup england have there names written on it already.

Maradona. Wow! Such an astoundingly great football player. Now he's nothing but a fat, bloated, coke head. The things that drugs do. May his sorry @$$ be an example to those of you who have been flirting with the idea to try drugs for the first time.
