Get a softball and a flashlight.
Hold the softball in front of you and hold the flashlight beside it so it's beam shines onto the ball.
If the light is coming from beside it it's like a half moon.
Move the flashlight so that it's shining on the ball but from slightly further away from you and the ball.
If the light is coming from slightly behind and beside the ball it'll be like the waning moon.
Put it another way, the moon has day and night on it's surface as well. The bright part you see is the half that's being illuminated by the sun.
On the moon the day night cycle takes around thirty days. The night is fifteen earth days long and the day is fifteen earth days long.

SUN MOON AND EARTH move in the sky. If the suns light does not fall fully on the moon and the earths shadow hides it it would appear so. Why not take two circularly cut papers and see hoe the shadow of one circle fall on the other.
