I thought I heard somewhere that after a year sunscreen looses some of its SPF power and you should replace it every year.

Look at expiration date on bottle. If you don't see one, throw it away and get a new one(look at its exp. date to make sure it isn't expired too)

I always buy new.I figure for $10 , I am not chancing my 3 and 5 yr. old burning. Plus, I always wonder if the stuff on the shelf in the spring is last years leftovers-anything else looses effectiveness after a year, why not sunscreen?

I went to the the American Academy of Dermatology for your answer. It says throw the old sunscreen away. It says after a year, sunscreen chemicals degrade and lose effectiveness.

The shelf life is about 2 years. Some have expiration dates on them. After that the active ingredients start to break down.
