Yahoo messenger has a mail alert built in. If you have Messenger open, you can have it play an alert which can be any wav file you choose. It you want to record one that says "You have mail!" and use that, you can.

You can try IncrediMail, it's a mail client just like outlook express. You can customize your alerts. Mine displays a "butler" saying "You have mail sir!" =) pretty neat. My own "Alfred" hahaha.
