Don't buy regular books with paper pages...the baby will immediately reach for the book and more than likely, tear the pages. Buy the board books (thick cardboard pages). Also keep in mind that your baby doesn't have to sit on your lap to read...s/he can be crawling around or sitting next to you playing with a toy. As long as you're reading to her and she can hear your voice, it's still considered reading. :) I can't hold my 11 month old on my lap...he just grabs the book and chews on it. :) I usually put him in his walker or let him crawl around while I read.

get the baby and a book, a good big book with big colorful pictures and sat the baby on the couch and read. Mom just read with a lot of animation to keep the baby interested. that is the most important part, keeping the baby interested. Good Job

At 8 months old they may not have the attention span to sit in your lap while you read. My son didn't so when he was lying down in his crib for a nap or at night I would sit next to the crib and read quietly to him while he went to sleep.

Just hold the baby and read. They find it comforting to hear your voice.

Choose books with big pictures and very little words on the page, so that you can hold his or her interest. One book that toddlers like is "No David." They also like books that have rhyme.

Hon, just pick a book, put your baby in your lap, and read.
I have read to my kids since they were infants.
