I work for a carpet cleaning company and any time we clean wool carpet or rugs we use an enzyme product so it does not smell like a wet dog when it dries. With the natural animal hair rugs you will get some yellowing, shrinking and bad smell if you don't treat it with the enzymes.

Take it out to the driveway. Put it on a old sheet. Get a hose out and thoroughly wet it. Put some Woolite diluted w/water in a bucket. Dump a little bucket water on the rug & smoosh it in real good w/your feet - make circles to clean dirty spots. Rinse it w/the hose. Leave it outside to dry. Works real good - I used to do this when I had one that my dog would tinkle on.

throw it in the washing machine with cold water and small bit of liquid soap for woolens. If it is too big for the machine then you will have to use a carpet scrubber.

I'd have it dry cleaned. It might shrink in the washer/dryer.
