About 1cm long, and make a really loud buzzing noise at night when they fly around? Sounds like a "punaise" as they're called here in France. Be careful when killing them. Do not touch them as they will leave a very strong smell, similar to almond essence on your hands, which doesn't come off easily

Could they be Japanese Beetles? If so they eat just about everything. Sevins dust will take care of them. They usually show up when it is real hot. They eat all the"green" in plants and leave a brown looking lace. They love fruit trees and vegetable plants. Don't put out Japanese Beetle traps. That just attracts every beetle from 10 miles around. Treat them with sevins spray or dust.
