The area code 555 does not exist. They use it to stop weird people ( and we know how weird some Americans are ) phoning non existant people because they cant differetiate real life and fiction; a bit like coronation street viewers.
The number 911 is the emergency services number.

There are no numbers in the US that starts with a 555 exchange. So they don't have to worry about someone calling people's houses because of a number they heard in a movie or tv show.

because the area code 555 does not exist, there are many people that would try calling the #'s once they have seen it on TV and movies, so they created the 555 area code so real people wouldn't get bothered.

everyplace in the country has a certain number. originally it was designed to be easier for the stars to remember. they kept it as if they used any other number as in the famous song where the number of the girlfriend was given. thousands called every number within the country using area codes and the number. cellphones have their own numbers as well. by picking a nin existant prefix, no one could be called. the older movies used the letters but no one called until later down the road. the studio's had to pick a number that they could use so no star would be bothered. once in awhile, you will catch then using a regular number but its not edited out.

Those are klondike numbers which means the number that is on the movie does not actually exist.

EDIT - What I said is true, and it's not usualy the area code, it's the first 3 real numbers.
