Does a computer with onboard video automatically adjust the OS's ram when a stand-alone video card is installed?

I have onboard video that utilizes a portion of my installed ram, which is 1gb, it's currently registering 896mb. Will I have to make adjustments in the BIOS for the ram once I install a stand-alone video card, or is it done automatically once the card is put into place?

Thanks. :)

When you install the standalone video card you must first go into the BIOS to disable the on-board video. That should free up shared memory for your PC and probably give your system a good speed boost too! BIOS does NOT self adjust and you must disable the on-board card to avoid conflicts. Don't forget to install the drivers for the new card and I recommend you update these drivers from the manufacturers site on the Internet once your system is up and running again. Good Luck!

I did this before. You will have to uninstall your current drivers before putting in the new video card into your computer. The drivers take the memory from your mainmemory. You will have to plug the cord into the video card instead of the onboard motherboard vido slot. Then when it boots up get your cd that came with your video card and install the original drivers from that and then immediately go to windows update and get the newest updates for your video card drivers which could take a few times and then use the programs with the video to adjust for more resolution and such.

Most board manufacturers place a setting in the BIOS to turn off the onboard video, which will free up your ram.

Though, if there is no setting, the onboard is probably automatically disabled when you install the standalone card.
