Freeways are the roads so that you can drive 'freely' at the speed which thrills you. Otherwise there are congested ways also...like Paharganj in New Delhi. 'Freeways' support a country's economy when you reach to your destination saving time. But that costs money as they have to be made at specific road specifications, which means you require a lots of money. Except that some people in the government misuse this money, but ultimately the governement has to get back the investment. That's why there is TOLL TAX. You pay ONLY when you use it...otherwise not.

Supposedly to help pay for and maintain the roadways and interstates. And to counter some of the other comments we edo pay tolls on what are supposedly "freeways" because here in NewJersey we pay a toll on the Garden State Parkway.

I know that the the term is not used to signify anything monetary, but I think that we allo pay enough in taxes to help maintain the roadways, tolls are another way that the greedy government/business co-op has found to make use pay for what should have already been paid for.

I'm reasonable sure that ALL modes of river crossing (bridges and tunnels) as far north as the Rip Van Winkle Bridge in Catskill have a toll in the east-bound direction. The tolls get lower as you move further north, but the only way to avoid them altogether is to drive to Albany and cross the Dunn Memorial Bridge. And given the cost of gas, it would be cheaper to just pay the toll on one of the tunnels.

the govt state they have to charge a reasonable toll for exceptional roads just to cover maintenance costs,, never mind the cost of making it,,
however here in the uk they are few and far between and some recent campaigns have led to several tolls been scrapped(erskine bridge scotland and skye bridge scotland for example)
if you go to spain you are charged every 10 kilometres or so and a journey to a fairground or themepark can cost you 40 english pounds or about 75 dollars,,
tax on motorist is an easy option for all goverments and we never protest about it
maybe its time we did and in vast numbers

Corporate companies do not want a piece of anything if there's no profit involved. Governments are usually unwilling to expend the capital needed to build freeways, hence the commercial involvement...

A very idiotic answer by Politics. You do not have pay for tolls. You choose to pay for them so you don't get penalized for violating traffic laws.

Because they have not yet taken the tollbooth away.
This happens a lot after a "tollway" is completely paid for.
