You will be surprised to know that middle eastern cultures are the oldest civilizations in the world. The cradle of civilization was Sumeria which is located in present day Iraq. The Sumerians were a very advanced culture and had travelled to many places in the region, had developed art & music, wrote extensively etc. Their belief system was based on the many gods and in fact, there are some Christian traditions followed today that are distictintly Sumerian in their origins...Noah's flood for example is based on an the ancient story of Gilgamesh and his travels which is a Sumerian legend.
So in terms of great ancient civilizations we have....Sumerians; Phoenicians (present day Lebanon); Assyrians (present day Jordan); Babylonians ; Egyptians ......with the exception of Egyptians all can be found in the middle east......

Indian civilisation known as the Harappan civilisation or the Indus Valley civilasation is the oldest.
Man made structures as old as 9500 years old have been found submerged in the sea off the Gujarat coast in India.
The Mesopotamian or Sumerian civilisation is 5500 years old and the Egyptian civilisation is only 5200 years old.
Earlier findings said Indus Valeey civilisation is only Around 5200 years old.
The fresh reports from Gujarat is suggesting that Indus Valley is much older than earlier presumed.Only that the older sites got submerged in sea.

The civilization Pvt Andrew was referring to was known as Babylon. Genesis states that God created Adam and Eve and that a few years down the road, men began to call upon the name of the Lord. However, men rebelled against God, and in Genesis 7, you find where God sent a flood to punish them. Yet a few generations later, we find someone by the name of Nimrod. Nimrod was the husband of Semiramus (his mother) and son of a man who was first credited with bringing civilations into being. He was the first to build cities. Before then, people lived in clans and wandered nomadically. When he brought them together, he did so by giving them an alternative to serving God. He gave them himself. However, he died before things really got kicked off. His son, Nimrod took over and declared himself God. His mother/wife was the second person of their still evolving trinity. Nimrod was killed by a son of Noah's, and Semiramus had to take drastic measures to insure her place on the religious, as well as political, throne. She had a baby. She claimed it was a fatherless conception, that the spirit of Tammuz (Nimrod) had conceived it. This was the third being in the alternative trinity. From this babylonian religion, every religion in the world can trace its roots. Every religion except the one that pre-dates it. The worship of God Almighty. God had promised his virgin-born son would redeem mankind through his death. Therefore, the great counterfeit was created. Semiramus claimed that Nimrod was slain to redeem mankind and that he arose again in the form of her new baby. They became the Madonna and child. Roman Catholicism is the modern day heir to the babylonian religion, and many of her rites, saints, and holy days can be traced back to Babylon, though the names mirror those of true christianity. For a more than thorough study into this, read The Two Babylons by Alexander Hislop.

Living civilazation?
Jews/Judiasm -
It is one of, if not the first, recorded monotheistic faiths and one of the oldest religious traditions still practiced today.
The underlying distinction between religion and race is foreign to Judaism itself, and is one form of the dualism between spirit and flesh that has its origin in Platonic philosophy and that permeated Hellenistic Judaism.
Judaism maintains that one born Jewish or one who converted to Judaism, retains their status as a Jew forever.

Dead civilazations?
Mesopatamia -
At Jarmo, oldest known permanent settlement around 9000-5000 BCE, crude mud houses, wheat grown from seed, herds of goats, sheep, and pigs were present.
In 2750, Gilgamesh, hero of Sumerian legends, reigns as king of Erech.
Worship of the 'Mother Goddess' was important in all eras and people here.
In 600, Nebuchadrezzar II rules Neo-Babylonian empire. Razes Jerusalem, takes Jews into captivity in Babylon.

China.
The Chinese faith and beliefs are based on ancestry, nature, respect for elders and an unrelenting belief that we all have to suffer; die; return to this life.
Until we get it right.
Of course, most Chinese today believe that nothing is as important as BEING Chinese.
