Best solution is to backup ur data to external HDD.
the problem is am not sure this is cheapest way(but i do not know cheaper).
unfortunately, i'm not good HDD advisor, but i think 100$ 'll be more then enough(say, for 300gb or even more).
As for backup software, u can use freewares, but i don't think they can backup on another removable disk.
so, use True Image . it's quite cheap and safe.
and it can save backups directly to DVDs without using 3rd party DVD burning software. it also compress files/folders size (about 2./1 maybe better)
so if 150 $ isn't too much for then here u go.

Well, I wouldn't say the only solution is tape. I've recommended to several individuals the new one touch solutions that most of the hard drive manufactures have brought out. Specifically, Maxtor has several versions which can connect on either USB, firewire or 1394. Prices vary, but about 350 for 500gb. Beats losing data on tapes which are going to be both slow and a hassle if one tape out of the set goes belly up. Drive itself is of course external and if your actually moving the data from one machine to another will save you loads of time in lieu of swapping tapes to restore the image.

that only solution and cheapest is buying a tape drive and taking backup. each tape can carry upto 40 gb . but the problem with tape drive is that they are slow and take lot of time when restoring.
and the other alternative compressing you data with URAC or WINRAR is buying a dvd drive. each dvd can hold 8gb (dual layer).

500GB?
Thats a lot of data! 0.5 of a terabyte!
How do you have that and what are you intending on backing up to?
Tape I think might be your only option short of buying a lot of d/l DVD's
